Letter From the Author

Welcome Cypherpunks, Hacktivists, Ancaps, and Contrarians!

In the past 18 months, we have witnessed the formalization of the New Societies Movement, a phenomenon that marks a pivotal shift in our understanding and application of civic infrastructure and sociological systems. This movement, built over decades by dozens of tireless individuals and organizations, felt like it was capstoned by Balaji Srinivasan’s groundbreaking book, The Network State. This represented not just a theoretical exploration but a practical embodiment of new-age governance and societal coordination.

Today, we continue to see substantial victories for entities like Prospera, which have demonstrated the tangible benefits and potential of startup cities. Their success stories are a testament to the viability of these new societal models. Similarly, Palau's expansion on Estonia's pioneering digital residency program, initiated in 2014, showcases how traditional nations are adapting to this new paradigm. This interplay between emerging network states and established nations is crafting a unique tapestry of governance in the digital age.

Moreover, Pronomos Capital’s continued investment and capitalization of this space underscores the growing economic and strategic importance of network states and new societies. The seminal Network State Event, along with countless other efforts worldwide, has galvanized this movement, bringing together thinkers, policymakers, and technologists to forge a new path forward.

This evolution comes at a critical juncture. Our era is marked by unprecedented geopolitical conflicts, unrestrained inflation, and growing polarization within nations. We are witnessing the beginnings of the collapse of large institutions, including governments, healthcare systems, and media outlets. In their place, a more decentralized form of service provision is emerging, one that is more adaptive, resilient, and reflective of our interconnected world.

The recent growth in startup cities, network states, and available capital for this emerging sector marks the beginning of more than just a curiosity around new forms of government. It represents a fundamental shift in how humanity assembles, coordinates, and addresses our most significant challenges. This movement is about reimagining our collective future, prioritizing innovation, inclusivity, and resilience in our societal structures.

We invite you to be a part of this journey. Your feedback, questions, and contributions are invaluable as we navigate this uncharted territory. Please feel free to reach out to us at [email protected]. Together, we can contribute to building a more connected, efficient, and humane world.

Yours sincerely,

MDMH

Computational Social Science: The Road to Building Robust Societies

As we build societies for the future, computational social science (CSS) becomes an essential tool for making data-backed improvements.

Introduction

For those unfamiliar, Computational Social Science (CSS) fuses traditional social sciences with computational methods like AI, ML, network analysis, and agent based simulation. At the heart of this intersection lies an ambitious goal: decode societal structures and behaviors to improve policy-making and societal outcomes.

CSS stems on the researchers ability to retrieve and process enormous amounts of societal data, transforming it into cohesive patterns that provide a clear depiction of communal systems. The hope for any nation state is to use this deeper understanding to create efficient and harmonious societal blueprints.

Some ways we use CSS today include… Read more

UX for New Societies

As we find ourselves at the beginning of a new era in nation-state formation and iteration there is growing opportunity to reinvent how we approach the challenge of building resilient, flourishing societies. If we are to envision a future that has any level of ancap flavoring, then it may be useful for us to begin leaning into the analogy of nation states as products that compete for the attention and financial resources of prospective citizens.

So then, the primary offerings of e-residency applications feel less like exciting product features and rather the baseline backend-driven MVP that lets someone gain access without even a simple CTA to keep new citizens engaged. With a dozen plus new passport-style memberships coming online over the past year, few if any get people participating immediately through ritual.

One key factor to consider here… Read more
